Quentin’s route to furniture design is an unusual and interesting one. After graduating from City University where he read Philosophy and Psychology he got his Skippers papers and set off on the high seas for adventure. During his time as a crewman on the tall ship “Europa” he sailed on a return voyage from Europe to Antarctica. It was on this voyage he honed his rigging skills that he now incorporates into his designs.
He has also spent considerable time sailing in the North of Norway and to the island archipelago of “Svalbard”. During this time he visited Norse heritage centres and sailed in some of the most dramatic coastline in the world. He’s even been mentioned in the “Guinness book of world records” for his part in crewing the multihull “Playstation” when it broke four world sailing speed records. The discipline and dedication he learnt at sea has been carried into his work now and he continually strives for the highest standards in his workmanship.
Quentin then settled into family life and worked managing the forests of a large estate in Aberdeenshire as a forester planting native woodlands. His tree planting business has planted over 50,000 native trees. He aims to continue with some tree planting activity in order to ensure both the long term sustainability of his profession and for the benefit of the wider communityand natural habit. This experience gives him unique insight in to the nature of the wood he now works with and something clients can share.
During his time at the Chippendale School of Furniture he gained a wide variety of traditional woodworking , cabinetry and restoration skills and developed an understanding of furniture design history. He set out from the beginning to make his furniture more than just furniture, but to make furniture as art. Behind all his pieces there is a story, a philosophy and an ethic.
When he is back on dry land, Quentin draws on his nautical experience for inspiration. He uses his memories of his Sea faring life and other journeys to inspire his designs and his studies in philosophy and art to help conceptualize his work and give it a unique story.
