Story telling Chair at the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum

"The handcrafted chair by Quentin Dimmer has now established itself as a focal point of museum life at the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum. To adults and children alike it is an object of much intrigue and beauty, inviting those viewing it to let their imaginations run free and study the different woods used. The structure, carved to look like an upright boat, allows us to appropriate it to many tales that we wish to tell, following a journey as we do so (on sea, land or air). Having already been used for many school workshops, in the coming months it will play a key part in helping us over Easter to ‘steer’ the tale of J M Barrie’s Peter Pan, encouraging those listening to imagine Captain Hook’s boat and the lagoons integral to the tale. Shortly after this the chair will be used again as part of the upcoming Festival of Museums on 19 May, as Edinburgh artist collective Neu! Reekie! use it as part of their Burns stage show.  This fantastic one-of-a-kind creation keeps the history and value of storytelling alive at the birthplace of Scotland’s greatest storyteller and inspires future generations to come. Donald Smith, director of the Storytelling Centre, said: “The chair is graceful and uplifting, but it also works so well for storytelling, framing the performer visually and providing a sound board to project the voice. It really was a festival highlight in its own right.”

"Quentin was at the Chippendale International School of Furniture in 2010, and won the best furniture design award with his amazing Viking rocking chair. A piece that has since gone on to be exhibited at the Scottish International Story Telling Festival . Whilst on our course he was much liked amongst his peers and would be a valuable asset to anyone who might choose to work with him. If you decide to get Quentin to make and design a piece of furniture for you, I know that you will be very pleased with the finished article."Anselm Fraser, Priciple and Founder of the Chippendale International School of Furniture
